Happy New Year!!!

Thought this summed things up perfectly! Happy New Year!!

May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful, and don’t forget to make some art – write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself

A Monday Giggle

To start the week off, I believe I need a giggle…… And more so because this is the exact look I give someone when asked this question and my liner is on point! The time, effort and foot stamping it took to get them even……

Have a great week beauties!

Come on Beauty Retail Giants – play nice……

534de55c1056d2df54d2e7f4daaa9f6dI’ve been home in Australia now for almost a year! Can you believe it!  And I have to admit, my habit of comparing pricing here to overseas has all but stopped.

I had been told that you get a point where you just stop questioning how expensive things are here and just accept it for what it is. So I had a free Sunday and figured, I would do some investigating, just to see if pricing was getting closer or if it was still miles apart and while I had been pleasantly surprised with some brands, others……well it was heart breaking.

What also sparked this was, I had recently read an article, that when Sephora Australia’s website went live, they cut off access to the US Sephora site, to stop consumers doing price comparisons (WTF!). The response and outrage was immediate, their facebook page was flooded, people complained in store! And I believe they had every right to vent their frustrations. The way I see it, if we here in Oz, weren’t being over charged – they wouldn’t have the needed to take such measures, sparking such outrage within the beauty community. So why are we being charged so much more? Some companies say ‘it’s the exchange rate and postage” Well to that, I say, ever heard of google? There are numerous currency converter sites which will show you what something in US$/CA$ will cost in AUD$. And postage? Easy enough to work that out too!  What else you got?

Recently I received an email from Sephora in Canada advising me that my birthday gift was awaiting me! Excited, I logged into Sephora and started shopping. I found a beautiful YSL Eyeshadow palette, a Kat Von D Everlasting Lipstick in a colour that has been out of stock for yonks and some false eyelashes because I have recently learned how to apply them and now I am obsessed with falsies. My entire order came to CA$115 which was AUD$121. I got a discount of 20% because I am a rouge member and it came down to C$95 which was AU$101. When I logged on to the aussie make up site Mecca, I looked at the same palette to find it was on it’s own A$98.

So you can see I am not making this up, Side by side, the same products.

What I don’t think they retail giants understand is, it is human nature to try and get the best price for our money. We work hard for those pennies. I am more than happy to go to say Harvey Norman, price a TV, then go to JB Hi-Fi, price the exact same product and see which has the better price. I am also more than happy to ask if they will price match if I prefer the service of one retailer over another. If you want to keep your customers happy, give them a reason to stay loyal to you. Its really that simple.

The beauty community is a very fast yet fickle community. I reckon, look after us and you will have us for life!

D xx

Candle Bar Sydney – Pure Organic Soy Wax Candles

Quite simply, these candles make me happy. They are so richly scented and yet not over powering, they warm up a room with the most beautiful aromas and the candles themselves don’t get that black residue like so many other candles I have bought in the past.

I discovered these gems when I went to the local organic food market. For those in Sydney, if you haven’t yet checked out the Ramsgate Organic Foodies Market in Florence St, Ramsgate, it is a must! You will find everything you could ever want, and probably a lot of things you never knew you needed.

I’ve been to these markets now 3 times, and each time I’ve left with candles. I can’t help myself, every time I’ve gone, they have had new scents that have just blown my mind and my senses. The service you receive is just fabulous, they are so friendly, chatty and kind and you can tell they love what they do. They are packaged so beautifully, some coming in the glass jars I have, others in crystal – they are just stunning!

These soy candles are made from premium quality ingredients and burn for what seems like forever. They can actually also be used as perfume on the skin! This is what attracted my mum to them. More than one use, she’s sold!!

I cannot say enough awesome things about these candles. My favourite so far is Coconut Reef and Surrender which I am burning now…..

Everyone needs these candles in their life. Just sayin’

Where I found them – Ramsgate Organic Foodies Market, Sydney

What it cost me – $100 for 5 first visit, $22.50 each for my next 3, and a special one I bought for a gift was $45

First Impression – UD – Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Foundation

Phew, well the name in itself is a mouthful! So I had had my eyeballs on this product when I was living in Calgary. It had been on the wish list for as long as I could remember, but I never actually got around the buying it. And then as you know, I moved home to Sydney and to my horror, Urban Decay wasn’t sold here! Now when Mecca Maxima had their Urban Decay release last week, I knew it was time. I may have skipped to the store, I may have grabbed the first staff member available to colour match me and I may have uttered the words “I’ll take it” within 2seconds of seeing my skin after application.

I have to say first off, the colour range for this foundation is fantastic! There are so many shades, every girl, no matter your skin colour or type – there is something for you! I was matched to a 3.5 and I mean PERFECTLY matched! There was not even a hint of a line along my jaw. For me – that is rare as I have both pink AND yellow undertones, so finding an exact match is hard for me.

When I first pumped out some of the product, I did think it was a little too liquidy for my liking, but that all changed on application. It is beautiful, so light weight! I haven’t used it with my F80 Kabuki brush yet, just with a beauty blender and I am loving it so far! It is a medium coverage, but buildable to full should you need a little something more and best of all – it doesn’t get cakey! It has a semi-matte finish which is quite nice as well. The lasting power is great, I do prime my face first as always and use a setting spray to set everything at the end of my makeup application, but this stuff still looks nice after a brisk walk in humidity and a sweaty workout!

As always I love that UD doesn’t test on animals and for this Urban Decay has a special place in my heart for sure!

If you have been struggling for a nice lightweight foundation that still lets your natural skin shine through, check out your nearest Urban Decay stockist and give this product a go. You wont regret it!

Where I found it – my new love – Mecca Maxima at Miranda Westfield

What I paid for it – AUD$56 (incl tax)

Review – Maybelline Fit Me Foundation

A little while ago my friend in Calgary sent me the Maybelline Fit Me “Matte and Poreless” foundation for me to try. And I have been using constantly for the past month. I absolutely love it! Being in the constant humidity that surrounds Sydney, I usually end up looking like an oily watery mess – not the lovely dewy look some people strive for mind you, more like I have dumped my face in water and not bothered to dab my face to get the excess water off.

I didn’t want to review this product too soon in case it was just a once off then my face went back to its usual oily mess. BUT IT DIDN’T!! I have been using this constantly and not only have I received the most compliments on my makeup since I started using it, but my face has stayed matte, my pores are nicely covered up and hardly noticeable, and when I get home – after a 20min train ride on a crowded train and a 10 minute walk in the sun, its still mostly matte! I might have the slightest ‘shine’ in my T-Zone, but this I would class as the dewy look a lot of people strive for!

The only problem with it is that I cannot find it here in Sydney yet (if you have seen it, please let me know where), we have a new one out which is called Dewy and Smooth (naturally) but hopefully they will bring the Matte and Poreless out here soon! Otherwise, I may have to beg and plead my friend to grab me another bottle!

I might have to stock up on my next trip overseas!

Where I found it – it was sent to me from my friend in Calgary

What it cost me – It was a gift, but my friend tells me it retails at CAD$10.99RRP + tax (but when it’s on sale, anywhere between $7.99 + tax and $8.49 + tax depending on the retailer)
